cYCLE WRITER (2004-2007)
In 2004 local documentary filmmaker Stuart McKears embarked on a project that would not only push his production skills to the limit, but be a huge emotional rollercoaster throughout its development.
Cycle Writer is a film about a year in the life of Monika Smith, a local freelance photo journalist who worked in and around the Bognor Regis area.
The documentary actually covers approximately 14 months, December 2003 to January 2005, and shows Monika interviewing and photographing nearly 100 diverse individuals, events and organisations, creating local stories that together weave a fascinating tapestry of life in our communities.
In the early part of 2005, just after principal photography was completed, Monika was diagnosed with cancer and very sadly died in January 2006. Stuart too lost his mother and his cousin around the same time.
Edited down to a running time of 89 mins, Cycle Writer premiered May 2007 in Bognor Regis at a special tribute night to Monika.
