Before Laser Disc, before Video 2000, before Betamax, before VHS, before any Home Entertainment format there was … SUPER 8!

Mark Williams was born in May 1963, in the late 70s and early 80s he was a projectionist in London for Paramount Pictures UK.

He started collecting Super 8mm films in 1975, and as his expertise grew over the decades, he has frequently been asked to write articles for various film collectors publications and specialist cult and horror film magazines.

In 2014 he co-directed and produced a smash-hit cult documentary VHS Forever? Psychotonic People and in 2020 a sequel followed, VHS Forever? Once Upon A Time in Camden.

Mark describes his debut self-published book Bootlace Cinema as "ten years in the making" and is a wonderfully illustrated celebration of classic horror, science fiction and exploitation films on Super 8, crammed with covers and old magazine ads that us of a certain age frequently recall seeing in cinema and film magazines in the 1970s.

As Mark lives locally, and we love the book so much, plans are afoot for a joint venture with Arun Film, to organise some Super 8 film shows and book signings in the region, if you'd like to be informed when these will take place, please email us, or just keep an eye on our various social media accounts, links at the bottom of this page.

In the meantime you can order Bootlace Cinema via Amazon UK, USA and Canada, and if you use Facebook, you are welcome to join Mark's group.

If you'd like to know more about Mark and the book, you can see him on the Carlisle Cult Cinema Club or listen to him being interviewed on the podcast The Humming Projector, plus read this review from The Clint Eastwood Archive

Whether you’re a collector, have an interest in ‘dead’ formats, or are merely fascinated with film history, Bootlace Cinema is a valuable resource and entertaining read.
