ARUNDEL TV SHOWS

doctor who (1988)

The 1988 Doctor Who story Silver Nemesis, starred Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred, in an adventure featuring Nazis and Cybermen, with some scenes filmed at Arundel Castle.

Production resumed in Arundel, West Sussex from June 26th to 30th. The first four days were spent on the grounds of the eleventh-century Arundel Castle, which stood in for Windsor Castle. On the 27th, several tourists were baffled by the appearance of a portrait which was not mentioned in the castle guidebook. In fact, it was a creation of the Doctor Who design team, and depicted Ace in the style of Thomas Gainsborough.

Text from Shannon Patrick Sullivan's A Brief History Of Time (Travel) which features detailed production notes on every Doctor Who story, including Silver Nemesis.
If you're in the UK you can watch the episode in question on the BBC IPlayer.

HENRY VIII (2003)

A two part mini-series documenting the stormy thirty-eight-year reign of King Henry VIII, starring Ray Winstone, Helena Bonham-Carter, Bavid Suchet, Sean Bean, Emily Blunt and Joss Ackland.

In the UK it was broadcast on ITV, 12 & 19 October 2003, and according to the Daily Telegraph. its pre-production history was quite amusing.

Originally, Granada's Head of Drama, Andy Harries, approached Alan Bleasdale to write the screenplay. Bleasdale was enthusiastic, envisaging an opening scene in which Henry meets the devil in hell.

Months later, Nick Elliott, ITV's drama commissioner, asked how the script was progressing. Harries mentioned the devil.

"Nick just exploded: 'I'm not having the devil on ITV. You'd better ring him and tell him I'm not paying £5 million to have the devil on ITV'." Bleasdale's response was equally forthright: he told ITV where to go. He was replaced by Peter Morgan, who had written the Granada drama The Jury.
